She bit the corner of her lip anxiously, but kept her tone quiet and calm. "I didn't mean that, it's just that I-well, I don't know how I'd react to that."
She couldn't bring herself to say "losing you", the thought terrified her. Not only would it plunge the lot of them into a very tense situation, it would also rob her of the one person she'd come to rely on more than any other.

He nodded oblivious to the words she had mentioned in her mind. He really couldn't let another person be in danger, after all she was young and had more of a chance to really thrive off society than he ever did. He knew that he would have to die in some case, and this was probably it.

"Sora....what if we both go?" he asked.

He rarely was a man to compromise.

She considered this, surprised that he'd suggested it at all.
"Fair enough." she nodded, surmising that was going to be the best she got, however uncomfortable she still felt.

He nodded and began to formulate a plan.

"Now......we shall both take different classes based on the class years. Depending on how they are ranked in class you will study their responses and their actions. As will I of course"

"Understood. And if we find someone of suspicion?" she questioned.

He nodded and looked at the papers.

"Do me a favor....I need you to search the possible classes given during the times of the killing to make a prototype of a class schedule, that way we can inscribe ourselves into said classes."

"Alright, would you like me to print them out once I've found them?" she asked, going over to the main computer and searching To-Oh's website.

He nodded.

"That would be most helpful Soar" he said.

He began to walk off towards the sitting room.

"Once you are done, simply come to where I usually am" he muttered.

"Right." she scanned through the course listings, copying the ones that seemed most prominent, but her thoughts were elsewhere. When she'd compiled a decent list, she printed out the sheets and traced L's path to the outer room.

L seemed to be enthralled by the cheesecake in front of him. His eyes were wide and he carefully lifted a scoopful of cake and placed it in his mouth. He savored it as a connaseur would.

"Found anything?" he asked after he carefully swallowed the cake.

"Yes, there are a couple classes that might fit the bill." she answered, setting the sheaf of papers on the table and taking a seat in a nearby armchair.

He looked over her to see the classes.

"Did you print out the students that fit that schedule exactly, or near it?" he asked.

"I think so, just a sec," she flipped through the stack quickly and produced a piece of paper with a list of students' names. "That's the one."

He looked at the students and only two fit the profile.

"Which one of these two students are you taking?" he asked. "I am giving you the choice."

She looked at the two names selected and considered both backgrounds, thinking which was the more likely suspect.
"I'll tail Yagami Light." she announced finally. "Son of the police chief."

He looked at the name and began searching through the boys profile. He seemed to be the closest to the profile and he looked up at her.

"You chose Light Yagami.....tell me, why didn't you choose Myu Takashi?" he asked.

Her teeth found her lip again - she would have preferred that he had not asked her this question, and she didn't want to lie, hell, it was pointless to lie to L.
"He seemed the more likely subject." she sighed, averting her eyes, "But to be fair, you did allow me a choice."

If he was used to showing more emotion, he would have shook his head amused by her comment. She rarely lied to him, and it was almost incapable of lying. He simply needed to ask her a question and she would burst out with the truth.

"I did....didn't I" he said, "Now tell me, was it worth sending me on a wild goose chase? Was it really for my best interest, or was it for your selfish reason?"

"Both of those were to keep you safe, if that's what you mean." she responded, "And most everyone in this will agree that in itself is well worth it."

He wondered about her statement.

"Was saving me really for my own good......or was it for your selfish needs Sora?" he asked. "I have no fear in losing my life for justice. Who is this everyone?"


He wondered if it was really for his wellbeing or was it simply for her emotional connection to him.

"Perhaps a bit of both." she admitted, looking away still.
"Everyone would be Watari, the successors...myself... they might not act like it, but I'm sure they'd be shaken if something happened."

He lifted his hand and placed it over hers.

"Soar........you need to remove your emotions from this case. I would hate to see your perish under the hands of Kira."

She looked up at last, startled by his contact with her.
"I can usually contain myself, but this case... it's just so odd. It's like everything we know is of no use here."

He nodded and patted her hand.

"Once that work with controlling your emotions....then I will take you off the case. Not completely of course....I depend too much on you, but going outside towards society, you might not be ready for it."

She didn't like the idea, but she bowed her head in surrender, knowing that she'd probably do better at headquarters where she wouldn't be constantly worried about the dangers outside. A sheltered existence had done this to her and to all of them, and it was times like this where it was a very bad thing.
